In Italy there are many jobs that come from antiquity, especially in the craft department. But do you know which one is of the most ancient crafts of the industrial leather district of Marche (where Giardini was born)?
I'm talking about leather craftsmanship: the ability, to take tanned animal leather and turn it into high-fashion objects and everyday use.
Our territory is full of testimonies of real artisans, but today we want to talk about the story of Luca Mataloni, a real artisan from Marche (Italian Region) where Giardini was born.
We will explore this craft though the eyes of a real craftsman, Luca Mataloni, artisan for over 55 years.
Despite his 72 years Mr. Luca, still can't think about retirement, because spending his days without leather is impossible for him. He is living proof of the fact that when you do what you love, you no longer consider it just work.
We have also asked some questions to Mr Luca.
Have you always wanted to work in the leather industry?
Actually, I had to become a dentist - he tells me with a sincere laugh! And he continues- The war was just over and everyone was fighting to get a job. I got good grades in school and my father managed to guarantee me a place at the School for Dentists. But fate had something different in store for me. My family was having some problems so I couldn't study and I had to find a job, which then became my passion. Leather processing.
Did you find a Master leather crafter to know the tricks of this art?
Yes, fortunately in the lab where I started working there were excellent artisans who were willing to teach me this wonderful art.
They taught me a lot, not only about leather but also about life. They always said to me: "Luca, don't think you know everything, because in life you never stop learning."
What was the most rewarding moment of your long career in the leather industry?
At my age, we never talk about a single moment. But perhaps the most important was when I presented my personal collection. There, my dream came true.
What would you recommend to young people who want to take this path?
Stay humble, listen to those who have more knowledge than you and don't be afraid to take risks.
