SOLVENT, ACRYLIC AND NANOTECHNOLOGY: THE EVOLUTION OF THE PAINT

The evolution of the paint: past and present, how the paint formulation has changed. Find out Giardini MAXMATT the most green leather edge paint with the best technical features.

1. THE LATE PAST

Until fifty years almost all the paints sales into the market were solvent based. This because the solvent facilitates the paint’s application, reduce the dry time, and contribute to the formation of a regular paint film. On the other hand during the drying phase the solvent evaporates releasing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, with a negative, toxic impact on the environment, and hazards for the operators using the paint.

2. THE RECENT PAST

As the paint technology improve during the last years, supported by the legislation, even the edge paint for leather goes into that direction, turning to water-based paint. A water-based paint is a paint with a low percentage of solvent inside. All the paints for leather edge so turn into acrylic emulsion, with low percentage of solvent inside, but still with a VOC around 12%-18% range.

3. THE PRESENT

The last frontier of technology in terms of chemicals is the nanotechnology, it means the introduction of nanoparticles into existing coating formulations improving scratch, corrosion and UV resistance.

Using nanotechnology in our development we were able to reduce to VOCs less than 1% in our last development, making MAXMATT the most green leather edge paint with the best technical features.
