Bluetiful: New Blue shade made in Lab

The history of colors, their use and their formulation is always a source of great interest, especially behind the belief that there is nothing new to be discovered in this regard.

Nothing can be more inaccurate in fact a new shade of blue has been discovered.

At the Oregon State University, researcher Andrew Smith was working on an experiment to obtain a fiber with high electrical conductivity, after heating the chemical components, Smith got a mixture that had nothing to do with his original intentions but it presented an unusual bright blue color. Involuntarily Smith has thus synthesized the first blue tone for about two centuries.

The color obtained, the YInMn Blue (temporary named after the elements that compose it), has a color intensity comparable to that of the International Klein Blue, created in 1956 by the artist Yves Klein and considered by him as "the most perfect expression of blue " but the new blue is not far behind: such intensity of color puts in a good mood, gives off energy and positivity.

In addition to being a pleasure for the eyes YInMn Blue is also important on a technical level: it is in fact a pure color, that is a color without any addition of black or white pigments, which does not present any degree of toxicity, as had happened instead for other blue pigments in the past, such as Prussian blue.

Bluetiful CrayolaIn 2017, a competition was held in England and the United States to find a "popular" name to be assigned to the shade. The chosen name is Bluetiful; the color was then put on sale by the Crayola company.
